I mentioned this to a few people earlier but things are now moving pretty fast. There is a new ORR event in TEXAS scheduled for October 13 - 16 2010. It will be run between Marfa and Presidio. The website is under construction (no need to visit yet). The state and all the landowners and cities have signed off. That's always the biggest hurdle. The start and finish lines are in place. This wil be a 2 leg race like Big Bend with 50 mile sections. Some people have already run it to map everything and have said this will now be the most challenging event being run. The BBORR has always been run on the best road and most popular event of the season but this may be pretty interesting too in the end. I'm going out to run and map the course in a couple of weeks looking for hazards and just making sure we haven't missed anything. The topo maps shows something like a 2000' climb and descent within a few miles as well as a long section of twisties through some old mining towns. Longer straights are on the northern part with the hills and curves coming up in the south, like Big Bend. The straights give you room to get up to your average on the 1st run and to make adjustments on the last leg. Marfa is a artsy mecca now as well as where they filmed Giant. You can stay in Elizabeth Taylor's or James Dean's room. Mystery lights, Indian ghosts and UFOs also like to visit there. Presidio is a busy little dusty bareknuckle town right on the border on the west end of Big Bend Natl. Park. The river road east to Terlingua (as in Shelby and Terlingua Racing Team) is spectacular. If anyone remembers the scene where they dug up "DOM" in the movie "Fandango", the cliff and rock are right off the road if you know where to look. Anyway, I thought I'd help my friend who is putting this on by doing some artwork and little stuff but it looks like I'm in deeper than I had planned. I'll post more as I learn details. I'm looking forward to runnnig the route again and see what it would be like at speed. Stay tuned.
