They aren't "fake." Tom Tjaarda has said on many occasions that they are  
very important design element of the car. Design is as much a part of the  
character of the car as is the motor or suspension. It's not hurting the  
performance, it will hurt the value and heritage of the car if you remove  them, 
so why, no, please, don't do it!!!
