 Part of the problem with the headlight buckets is getting the opening gap even on all four sides.
If not done correctly, you can chip the paint.

If your gaps are correct, here is a tip to retain them even with full removal of the bucket.

Remove the headlight lamp unit (NOT the bucket) and you will see the heads of the four studs that mount the
bucket to the plate that is attached to the headlight bar. Before removing the bucket to adjust its height with washers,
get a drill with a small bit and put three holes through the rear of the bucket and the headlight bar plate.

NOW remove the bucket and start stacking washers for the look you desire. You are assured the bucket gaps will 
remain as before as long as you align the three drilled holes before tightening the studs' nuts.
