[DeTomaso] Anybody know about oil filters?

When I go to the oil filter rack these days I see - in FRAM alone
Extra Guard
Tough Guard
Extended Guard
High Mileage
Racing
and Synthetic

I think that Extended and Synthetic are maybe the same product and I see 
the need
for more crap capacity for the 7 - 10K change intervals allowed for 
synthetics in new vehicles,
but what's the whole herd of products about?
Just smoke?
