[DeTomaso] Not running ...

Some oil pump pickups have a bypass hole - so you can still get some oil if
the screen is clogged. I don't know about a stock 351C/HO/Boss, though.

When I pulled my pan, years ago, it had enough debris to fill about half of
a coffee cup. The cam gear was ugly - no plastic + chunky teeth.

I'm still trying to figure out how something gets past the screen on the
oil pickup. I'm not saying it -can't-. I've only taken a couple
engines apart that had chunky stuff in the pan. They were not being
disassembled due to a shorn distributor pin. However, the chunky stuff
(in one case it was valve stem seals) had definitely been sucked up to
the screen. But the pump was clean, no chucks or debris to be found.
The pickup screen appeared to keep the bad large stuff from going to the
pump.

I would tend to believe more in the higher pressure pumps doing it. I
know one fella with a BOSS 351 who put in a high pressure oil pump and
he started shearing distributor pins.

I'm just sayin'
