You are correct an both accounts, Julian: importing to Canada falls under NAFTA and no duty is paid for cars over 25 years (regardless of where it was manufactured); and, yes, we don't pay any sales tax in Alberta, which I often forget about because it just makes so much sense!

It probably depends on where it is coming in from. I bet Canada comes under a NAFTA agreement so may be lower duties than overseas imports. If you can show the car was a US car at some point in its life then that may also prove beneficial for lower or no duty on re-importation.
 
Was your 5% just GST? Remember oil rich Alberta is more favorable than other Provinces which have PST too and will likely double that cost.

Out of interest, how much tax would Americans have to pay to import a Pantera?
 
It was 5% for me to bring my cat into Canada ...
