[DeTomaso] Shipping from the USA to Europe to sell?

It has been many years since I was involved in importing any grey market car
into the US. The bottom line is there is no simple answer. When I last did
it the duty was primarily dependent on the age of the car . A car more then
a certain age had no import duty. There are other potential expenses. A car
must meet the EPA and DOT regulations to be registered and driven on US
roads. back .n the *)'s there were substantial differences in cars built in
europe to be driven in europe ( like mercedes and porsche) and the same
model cars built in europe for use in the USA. Two of the most common that
come to mind are Mercedes SL models and porsche 930 Turbos ( which didn't
have a US equivilent.  It was a very expensive process to convert one of
these cars and I saw many incidents where a  person  paid a substantial
amount of money to have a car converted and then it didn't pass the
inspection. I believe that now most of  the standards have been adopted
internationaly so that most late model cars requiere much less in the way of
conversion  plus in the case of late model cars there is really no advantage
to import a grey market car to the US. If the car is a "Classic" there may
be no conversion neccesary as cars past a certain age are exempt and there
may be no duty. You would still have to pay the sales tax to register a car
in the state where you live. Like New York the sales tax (depending on the
city and county is around 8.625%)
Here is a link to the EPA web sight with information on importing a car into
the US. As I mentioned keep in mind besides the EPA there is also the DOT
and part of your potential expense may be based on how much you spent. US
customs has restrictions on  how much money you can spend outside of the US
without paying a duty. It is also dependent on the planned purpose of your
importation. If it is a race car, or show car or if you plan to operate it
on US highways. The bottom line is do alot of research before you spend any
money.
