Never tried it myself, but it was popular in the energy-poor '80s. Propane 
is very high octane (good) but has less energy per lb than gas (bad), so it 
was often combined with turbos to get power and torque back to where we were 
on gas. Can't remember what equivalent mileage was. Propane is also very 
dry and burns hotter, so most conversions used hard valve-seat inserts to keep 
from burning the seats in the block. The required propane tank is pretty 
bulky, too- about like a contracter's cross-bed toolbox for pickups. It was a 
pretty pricey conversion altogether. Ak MIller in Pico Rivera, CA made a 
good living off his conversions after he stopped racing. Good luck- J DeRyke
