[DeTomaso] Ford (Laminova) oil cooler project

Tomas,

You're right about the lack of space, but there is a separate enclosed space for the heater lines right above the radiator tubes.  If I use an electric pump in the nose for the heater, the heater lines go away so there is some extra room.  Ideally, I'd run the oil lines in the space provided for the heater hoses with minimal metal work to make room for the heat exchanger bodies below.

As far as capacity, it seems like a system issue.  Some engines run hotter, some radiators don't cool as well, etc.  Even the coolant you use makes a difference.  it seems almost like a black art.

I think that in the past, Dennis said you need an oil to water heat exchanger for a sustained 150+ MPH.  Most of us are not planning on that any time soon, so the question is more like what makes sense for sustained 120 or 130.  If an oil cooler keeps the oil temp low enough at these speeds, and these are your target speeds, then it's probably a good solution.

Roland Jäckel said the same thing as MD and I can imagine that autobahn
cruising and ORR is more than the Ford/Laminova can handle. For track day
use with a street Pantera they work well, I use one myself.

Fitting the Ford cooler underneath the car doesn't work unless you cut out
the floor above it almost entirely. I had a paper template of the cooler
cross section that I slid along the coolant tube to test that. Didn't work
on my car, your clearance may vary.

Ya, they may not work at "Mad Dog" WOT, but for the rest of us, maybe?  I
think John Taphorn and Jason Eaton have had good results with them at normal
human WOT.

If these are the ones I think they are they aren't worth a dam for cooling
at WOT....check with Mike Trusty or Dick Drenske who are both mechanical
engineers and can explain flow and restriction and cooling. ;-)

I picked up several of these oil coolers, which have a Laminova core and
appear to be functionally very similar to the Aeroquip Laminova oil
coolers.  I have looked but not measured the space available in the tunnel
under the body for the radiator tubes.  There is a separate passage above
this area for the heater hoses.  I would like to try to fit the oil cooler
in series with the return water tube, and make a small hole in the sheet
metal just above the tunnel and run the oil hoses (with
added insulation) where the heater hoses were, then use an electric pump up
front to pump water to the heater.

I have too many other projects and can't get to this in the short term.
If someone is interested in working on this, I will give them one of the
used Ford oil coolers in exchange for them sharing their results.
