It is broken.  ;-)

I suspect the piece(s) that have broken off are now trying to jam the  
mechanism.

Details not too important.

Take it out.

Package it very well.

Ship it to Bill Taylor along with $50.

Wait for him to work his magic and return it to you.

While waiting for Bill, check the cancel-feature tab that attaches to  
the steering shaft.  If broken, obtain a replacement.  eBay UK is a  
good place to find those if the vendors are not helpful.

Install the repaired switch and once again enjoy the self-canceling  
feature.
