Ah yes, you're talking about the simple spoiler was developed and run on the Gr4 cars for the 1972-73 season, and also used on the Gr3 and available as an option on the GTS through 1975.  When most people think of 'Gr4 air dam', they think of the bigger air dam that was introduced for the Gr4 cars in the 1974 season and used thereafter.

That flat blade spoiler seems to work just fine; Larry Finch and Gray Gregory (among other) use it.  There's no doubt that it results in improved roadholding; the full-size air dam is undoubtedly much better but brings with it a host of compromises, both aesthetic and practical in nature.
