You'll never beat the vendor prices doing it yourself.   By the time you 
source the material, have the pipes mandrel-bent to the right shapes, and 
beaded, and then polished, and then have tanks made with the appropriate inlets, 
outlets, and necks on them, you will spend much more money than if you just 
sucked it up and bought 'off the rack' from the vendors.

Having said that, there are several different options available.   Dennis 
Quella sells aluminum water pipes and aluminum water bottles, for example, 
which save a lot of weight.   Different vendors sell stainless steel stuff; 
some of the bottles are nicer-looking than others, but all are equally 
functional.

Metal has gone up in price dramatcally in the past few years, making these 
items substantially more expensive than they were just a few years ago...but 
it's still money well-spent, and as Jack said, you can view it as a 
one-time expense since the stainless items will never, ever wear out.
