118 db at idle? Wow, that's loud. Mufflers or are they gutted?

I have a stainless steel liner in the engine compartment but I ran a line of silicone weather striping type caulk around the edge of my hatch opening last time I had the cover off. I wanted to keep the heat and fumes out of the passenger compartment and I didn't think any kind of weather strippng would really provide an air tight seal.. I am also running headers and what appears to be a Hall type big muffler with no muffle. My car is 118 db at Idle., so I wanted to make the interior a little more sound proof.

I just did the same thing.
I didn't paint the firewall. I just cleaned it and applied the Dynamayt
overtop. Unless you're going to powerwash the engine bay every week, I
would'nt worry about rustproofing under the sound barrier.
For the hatch, I just got some ~ 5/8" weatherstripping (foam with 2 sided
tape) and applied that around the lip of the hatch. Sealed up just fine.
