This didn't post on the first try.
15W50 is the Mobil high-zinc oil.
Other grades of Mobil 1 are not.
They call it competition suitable ......

As Asa stated you need to be VERY careful in your choice of oil for a
flat tappet cammed engine. The Mobil 1 chart showed an oil that had
1200 ppm of ZDDP. But I've seen other Mobil 1 charts, that show that
level of ZDDP only for older mixes of oil, not for the stuff you can buy
at the auto parts store. Rotella and other diesel oils are not going to
be sufficient and are already starting to reduce the ZDDP levels.
Your best bet is to go with a specialty oil and to carefully research it.

I just checked the Mobil 1 web site an they say that their 15W50 (which is
what I use) has 1200 ppm of ZDDP. Most others in their line have 800ppm, a
couple have 1000ppm. Is 1200 enough? I don't know but it's better than
nothing, I guess.
Heres a chart of their product line The last line labled Phosphous content
is the ZDDP level.

Dear Asa,
I am a bit confused. I understand that Mobil 1, VR-1 and Amsoil, etc, are
trick, synthetic oils with many advantages over dino oil. My dumb question
is if those advantages include synthetic compensation for the lack of
ZDDP? My guess is that while they excel in most areas of oil function, the
specific problem area that ZDDP addresses requires----specificaly ZDDP.
Anybody know if the synthetics need no additives or if a little "snort" of
ZDDP is beneficial in our flat tappet cam engines?

But there are also alternatives out there, like Mobil 1, Valvoline VR-1,
Amsoil. You just need to do the research, and there is a lot of it out
there. I recently switched back to Amsoil and I'm loving it.

What you say is true-- any oil approved for a new car would be terrible
for a flat-tappet engine.
But if you use a gas-diesel approved oil like Delo or Rotella will still
be OK as of now.
That could change in the future if the government requires further
reductions in those oils also.

Subject: [DeTomaso] ZDDP zinc oil additive
I?have recently become aware that current motor oils are profoundly
lacking
enough zinc to adequately lubricate older engines.?
One of my MGC customers has had a major failure with his new Cam.?? I now
learn
that lack of sufficient zinc (ZDDP) in the oil is probably a supporting
if not
causation of the problem.? I now am now on board with what looks to be
the best
solution on the market...."ZDD plus".??? Anyway I wanted to offer the
group an
opportunity to purchase a small quantity (5 4oz bottles) at a 25%
discount to
the retail price of $9.95/bottle.? That would be enough to do 5 oil
changes.?
Moss gets $12/bottle with their dealer cost still over the MSR of $9.95
A brief run down of the problem:
http://www.macysgarage.com/myweb6/ZDDP.htm
?
More information about the product I sell at:
http://www.zddplus.com/
?
This is a real problem for pre catylitic cars with flat lifters.? I hope
to have
much more posted to my web site very soon.? This product has 4 times as
much as
the GM marketed brake in oil and is light years ahead of most any modern
oil.?
There seems to be a lot of chest pounding and out and out untruths about
several
modern oils but the bottom line is that if it is recommended for a new
car it
doesn't have sufficient ZDDP....reason being zinc eats catylitic
converters.?
