Your description is pretty complete and is true as far as I know. The rear
calipers are sinfully undersized for a car with the weight and speed of a
Pantera, and the stock proportioning valve only 'bandages a bullet wound' as
the saying goes. What many also forget is, that valve was supposedly matched
to the size of the stock tires. Still got those 185-70 x 15 belted-bias
tires up front and 215-70 x 15s in back?
We lost the complete front brake circuit in the stock master cylinder on
the way to 'Vegas one year. Fortunately, I'd removed the toy rear calipers and
replaced them with Porsche 911S 2-piston FRONT calipers which are about
twice as big as stock (they've now been on there 20+ years). We left S.J late,
but Judy managed to catch and then keep up with the 'spirited' Nor-Cal
caravan through the eastern Sierras, driving on the big rear calipers only. Her
only comment on arriving was, '.... the brake pedal seems awfully long....'
She was unable to lock even these rear brakes with our Pirelli P-7r rear
tires and no proportioning valve at all. FWIW- J Deryke
