I agree.  If you need something newer or roomier, a Protege 5 is a
good sport wagon but they are a little more pricey around $6k in the
early aughts with low mileage.  Same platform as the Escort, great on
gas and very fun to drive.

I drive a '94 Del Sol for daily service, and my SO drives a '03 325i
wagon with a 5 speed.  The Del Sol was only $2k including the new
cylinder head I had to install; but the BMW was $4k over your budget.
If you must have RWD, the BMWs are hard to beat.
