The technical term for the gauge reading difficulty is 'ground loop' which 
computer guys will recognize immediately. This is similar to politics: we 
citizens are all considered equal but some closer to the Center of the Universe 
(Washington DC) think they're a little more equal..... and so it is with Pantera 
ground points.   
Besides SO Bill's suggestions, remember the dash and the console are 
fiberglas even though the console gauge panel is metal. Finding a good chassis ground 
for the gauges will involve a little searching with a VOM, and may involve 
running a bundle of 4 ground wires up to the central ground lug. If your car 
still has the stock battery position, the under-dash ground lug is the backside of 
the battery ground wire post and is welded to the body. Grounds don't get any 
better- assuming the connecting nut for all those ground wires under the dash 
is tight and there's no rust. FWIW- J DeRyke
