Scott,
 
The resistor in series with the sensor is for cars with 260 deg  gauges. 
Nothing to do with the lighting.
 
The construction of the gauge prevents a ground for just the  lighting 
circuit. My suggestion is to dump the daisy chain and ground each gauge  with it's 
own ground wire. Mike Drew's suggestion of adding a second ground wire  at the 
end of the daisy chain might be an easier solution to the problem. You  would 
do this by finding whichever gauge ground terminal has only one black  wire, 
then add a wire at that gauge black wire to a good chassis  ground. Now all 
gauge ground terminals will have two wires attached and the  daisy chain will be 
grounded at each end.
 
The reduced current draw of LEDs might also solve the  problem.
