I used red synthetic grease, Mobil 1.   I can't say it's the best or the 
worst--it's just what I had lying around and seemed reasonable.

One thing that made a great improvement for me was opening up the wiper 
motor case, and sanding away the rust and corrosion that had built up in there 
over the years.   There are two long bolts which hold the cover (and the 
magnets) on, from the bottom.   With those bolts removed, the cover can be 
taken off.   Note that there are three brushes which can use a bit of cleaning, 
along with the magnets and the windings.   Reassemble with care, as you'll 
have to compress all three brushes while sliding the cover back into 
position.
