[DeTomaso] Pressure cap pressure

J,

This is not scientific but it has worked well for me.

Years ago when working with cooling engineers I was told that for a mid-engine car with long travel from engine to radiator, a low system pressure would be ideal as the coolant would flow more freely.  The higher the pressure the less the coolant wants to move within the system.
That works if you do not need the higher boiling point.

With a good coolant recovery system and 100% coolant I am easily able to use a 7 pound cap.  I run a 180 degree thermostat with a two row aluminum radiator, 350 CIs.  Most of the time, on a day in the high 80s, yesterday, my gauge reads just above the point that the thermostat has opened all the way.  I run a small spoiler just below the radiator to create a vacuum behind it and it is completely sealed off.
Any air entering the grill or lower front openings has to go through the radiator.

I think the key to cooling success is starting with a radiator that has high cooling capacity.  After you have that all the tricks will work.

All the best, Dick Ruzzin.
