I think retaining the screws so they cannot back out and scratch the glass is 
good advice. 
Knowing that I guess I would use the screws but put a little dab of some kind 
of cement under them just before the final tightening.

My car had some kind of small bevel-head screw.

Whatever you do, do it right because having to go back would be a big job.
