Obviously, I don't know what your engine has in/on it, but if you were
running any of the three possible stock oil pans and tires wider and stickier than
OEM (which is everyone in the world), your situation was almost certainly due
to the cornering capability of an average Pantera causing all the oil remaining
in the pan to slosh away from the pump pickup. This momentarily starves all
the bearings in every turn. In addition, its well known that under higher rpms
in a straight line, about 1 to 1-1/2 quarts of oil are trapped in each
rocker cover, leaving precious little lube down in the pan.
The obvious first move is to replace the pan with a larger oil capacity,
fully baffled unit, and not a cheap drag race pan either. Most Pantera owners
interested in performance have changed to the Aviaid or Armando pan, and
magically, bearing failures no longer occur even in dedicated track cars. Whether this
is a 'design flaw' in the 351C's oiling system or not is up to the consumer,
but 30+ years of experience says if you own a Pantera, change your pan first-
even if you never get close to a track! For at least the last two decades,
reputable engine builders familiar with the Pantera will not sell an engine &
warranty without a fully baffled, high-volume pan mounted.
My best guess- J Deryke
