Listen to the frequency. Does is knock at cam speed or crank speed? If cam speed, then check the valve train, If crank speed then check the accesories on the front or clutch at the rear......and hope its not coming from inside the pan. But if the sound changes with oil pressure, you may not be so fortunate.

Henrik,

Remove the valve covers and look for any loose parts. That's pretty much what you can do without digging into the engine for real. Is it possible that the fuel pump is making the noise? I've also heard of the harmonic balancer moving around leading to contact between the back of the balancer outer ring and the engine.
