[DeTomaso] DeTomaso Digest, Vol 47, Issue 9 IGNITION TROUBLE

Quick and easy thing to do is pull the distributor out, (you may want to
scratch some alignment marks on it first so you can get it back in the same
place without losing the current timing reference)...I guess you don't want
to complicate matters at this stage!
Have a look at the drive gear pin and if it looks ok,.. still be
suspicious....best check is to clamp the shaft end in a soft jaw vice and
then try twisting the gear with your hand at full strength...I found mine
shifted on the shaft and moved back to it's original position due to the pin
being split about 60% along it's length...enough to look ok but when under
load flexed and lost the timing. The symptoms were that it started, ticked
over, ran under light throttle openings but mis-fired and lost all power on
any kind of quick or firm throttle opening. (I was doing Nurburgring at the
time....big embarrassment being passed whilst popping and farting at 40 mph
by tourist coach) ..Rectified it by replacing old pin with a single coil
roll pin (4mm from memory) and then pressed a smaller one(2mm from memory)
inside that, hence doubled up...all been well for about 10 years
now......good luck.
