The latter.   January and February build 1972 cars are really 1971 cars in 
terms of overall specification (square bumpers, flat decklids, etc.).   The 
definitive "1972" look didn't come about until March, and the cars receive 
continued updates after that.

The later, the better (save for the fact that at some point in early 1972 
they switched over to the low-compression open-chamber heads).
