I had a similar issue (broken rocker arm) due to a misaligned pushrod.   
Instead of pushing up in the 'cup' in the adjuster (427 side-oiler, different 
rocker arm system), due to misalignment of the pushrod (my fault), the rocker arm 
overextended until the valve spring bottomed out.   The cam kept pushing, and 
something had to give, so the rocker arm popped.

Check for too-long pushrods, improper adjustement, or coil-bind at full 
extension of the pushrods.
