The DOT (Department Of Transportation/SAE) system is a hydraulic fluid rating
by boiling point and tolerance to moisture. Ford DOT-3 brake fluid is popular
with racers because its boiling point when fresh was a little higher than
many more expensive ones. Its rated as only DOT-3 because it adsorbs water faster
than many others as well, and adsorbed water markedly lowers the boiling
point in older fluids. But since racers change their brake and clutch fluids after
each event- and sometimes during an event- this is a non-issue for them.
On the other hand, if you intend to treat the car more as a street machine,
use something that tolerates up to yearly changes- like any DOT-4 from the auto
parts stores. Also, avoid DOT-5 silicone fluids- they're unstable. Good luck-
