[DeTomaso] DeTomaso Digest, Vol 49, Issue 28 reply to message #1

I purchased a big block ford stroker kit to build up a 460 from
Speed-O-Motive and have had great results. I had an engine builder
double check rod weights and piston weights and they were production
engine worthy. Of course a meticulous engine builder will want to take
the weight deltas out to a helium nano-lightband, so I had to keep
reeling him in. Call them on the phone, they were more than helpful.

Another gay?
The crank and rods had to be machined. I'm sure if you buy a quality kit
it'll work out. Just like anything you buy.. if something is much
cheaper than the others, there's a reason..

Hi

I've heard about another gay with the same experience. Did you need to
machine the crank or the block?

My worries about buying the part separately is to get parts that works
good together. I'm rebuilding the car myself and it seems safer to by
parts as a kit...

I'm having a new stroker Clevor built. My builder prefers to buy the
components induvidually. My last stroker kit was on the cheap side and
required add'l machine work.

That is funny. I imagine it is a matter of one's perspective. I
suppose it
is equally accurate to mention that as a result there will be fewer
flights
from Reno to Las Vegas.

Yes, with a very complicated torsion bars suspension system and
interleaved road wheels that made changing damaged torsion bars quite
time consuming.

There?s a company in New Mexico that can take your Veglia gauges and
install VDO
internals with a matched sending unit. This will make the gauges read
correctly and still
maintain the original look of the gauge set. The poster reports that a
friend just did this
with his car and the set up works great.

All,

for what its worth I have had her rebuild all my gauges in my Sunbeam
Tiger
and she was GREAT to work with. She is the "go-to" person for all gauge
rebuilding for the Sunbeam Tigers (and I'm sure many others). As some
of
you know Tigers suffer from overheating issues as well and she took my
Temp
gauge and my sending unit and calibrated them together.

I give her a STRONG recommendation.

Lynn (owner of two cars with overheating issues but due to length of
restoration it is doubtful that I will ever have issues at the same
time)

Not sure about the post-80s wide body cars but there are four different
factory schematics for '71-'76 cars, all different, and in my
experience, none fit
any car perfectly. What '71-76 Pantera owners do is order the schematic
with
the closest published date to the build date of their car, and annotate
that
schematic as variations are found on your machine. I suspect the late
cars
will vary about the same. Good luck- J Deryke

IMHO the hardest part of this project is un-crimping and re-crimping the

chrome-plated brass surrounds that hold the glass fronts on the gauges.
Being
brass, this can be done approximately once before the brass work-hardens
and
cracks. If you've never done this, Ms. Lucas sounds like a good deal
(and they may
have spare parts). My 2?- J DeRyke

Chris,

Madd Dawggie has an instillation procedure for the third fan. It
includes
your sphincter. You may want to pass on that one.

That is largely irrelevant. I cannot imagine many people would fly from
LV to Reno or vice versa. If someone should want to fly, there are
flights every about every hour all day long on Southwest from $69 each
way.

You guys are missing my point. I was referring that it could affect
'connecting' flights. Duh!

The way things are going, one never can count on the airline still being
in
business when the time comes. My daughter had reservations already made
in the
spring for a Nov. trip to Hawaii; she's already had to reschedule once
due to
flights no longer available and is keeping her fingers crossed no other
airlines stop services before the time comes.

I have been contacted by 0-60 magazine via the Registry.

They are looking for a (stock-ish) 1980's vintage Pantera for a photo

They are in the New York area. If someone with the right car

There was a set on eBay recently (search the completed auctions)

The pair went for $$.

Does he really have to have "new", as you state?

What about used? Or used and have them re-chromed?

As there are several versions, make sure which.

The myth about the cost of drinks at the Fun Rally keeps coming up.
?
To clarify - the cost of the open bar is only a small fraction?of the
overall event cost. If we eliminated the open bar or went ala carte,
the event cost would drop only slightly, but the individual costs would
rise dramatically even for non-drinkers.

Of course, we certainly do not want to encourage the consumption of
alcohol, but we should make informed decisions about the costs.

A bit of background: there are three ways a hotel can charge for drinks.
There is a cash bar where every individual pays for his or her drinks
which can range from around $3 for water to $8 for mixed drinks. There
is a hosted bar, where the bartender keeps track of every drink then
bills the host for the total amount. The third way is to have a corkage
deal where we buy our drinks in bulk (e.g. Costco) then pay a 30%
corkage fee to the hotel and hire the bartenders by the hour.

The corkage deal keeps our costs way down. For example, a 1.75 liter
bottle of Jose runs less than 50 cents per oz. With mixer, cup, ice and
30 seconds of the bartender's time, our costs are around a dollar for a
mixed drink. The same deal applies for the bulk-purchased water, soft
drinks, beer, and wine.

With the corkage deal, the cost for the open bar works out to be about
$7 per person per day.? This works out to be a little over $1,500 per
day for the group.

If we went with the hosted bar, the cost to the group would be pushing
$10,000 per day, so that way is not viable.

The argument could be made the cash bar way would save non-drinkers the
$7 cost, but that is a false economy. If someone buys a couple of
bottles of water or a couple of soft drinks at $3 a piece, they are not
saving much in reality. With three or more bottles of water or soft
drinks, they would actually be loosing money.

Probably the single best overall tank used in WWII, on any side.

The Tiger I was a LOT more effective, and the Tiger II (King Tiger) was
unstoppable, except it was grossly underpowered, overweight, and
suffered from
mechanical unreliability. You didn't defeat a King Tiger, so much as
you just
waited around for it to bog down or break down.

He has not been for the last couple of years. Yes, usually about 50+
Ferraris, 20+ Lambos, 10-15 Masers, 4-8 Panteras, a couple of Iso
Grifos,
lots of Italian bikes, fiats, lancias, etc.

We have one guy in Everett is responsible for most of the Lambos the
past
few years, and is a major sponsor, Steve Cats, of Cats Exotics (see the
banner on the website). Hobby gone wild, he claims to have personally
doubled the Lambo population in the NW. Here is a Youtube of his racing
Diablo on a dyno run.

Mustangs had 'em.

When I switched to a diaphragm clutch in my 67 Mustang, I had to remove
the assist spring. With the spring, the pedal went straight to the
floor.

Whatever you do, do NOT use zip-ties through the radiator as the sole
means
of supporting the fan. That's a hillbilly technique which will, in the
long
run, most likely see you on the side of the road with steam coming out,
as your
zip ties act like little saws and cut through the fragile radiator
tubes.

I think Jack DeRyke suggested using brake tubing or something similar,
pushing the metal tubes through the fins, then running the zip ties
through those.
The tubes would insulate the radiator from the potential damage caused
by the
zip ties. Brilliant idea! :>)

BTW I've never seen a Pantera that needed a third fan. All you need is
two
properly operating fans, either pushers or suckers. If you do add a
third
fan for whatever reason, make sure you do NOT wire it up in parallel
with one of
the other fans--that is, don't cause the wiring intended to power a
single
fan, to have to power two fans instead. The stock fan wiring scheme is

marginal to begin with.

Instead, create a separate circuit for the third fan, complete with a
seperate fuse and power source. You can use one of the existing fan
relays to
trigger the third fan however.

There were at least three different styles of Pre-L rear bumpers.
There
were two different versions of the square-edge 1971 bumpers, plus one
and maybe
two different styles of the rounded-edge 1972 bumpers (which were still
used in
Europe after August 1972, but not on US-market cars).

So, what does he have, and which type does he want?

Panteras had the opposite approach--springs designed to withdraw the
pedal,
not help to depress it. The springs are not coil springs, but rather a

hair-pin style, wrapped around the main shaft that the pedals pivot on.
One each
for the brake and clutch. These springs have snapped on roughly 100%
of the
Panteras out there, and almost nobody knows they are even there. Crawl
under
the dash sometime and you'll probably find yours sitting there and doing

nothing.

Replacing them is simple enough but requires you to remove the whole
pedal
bracket, then remove the clutch pedal from the shaft, withdraw the
shaft, remove
the broken springs, install the new ones and reassemble.

Here's a photo of a unit that I rebuilt on Stephane Bergeron's car a
couple
of years ago. This is the 'before' photo, showing that the brake pedal
spring
is working, and the clutch pedal spring isn't, because it snapped in
two! I
had already removed it when I shot this photo:

http://members.aol.com/mikeldrew/Pedals.jpg

The completed assembly (with new springs, available cheap from the
Pantera
vendors) was a thing of beauty, with the aluminum plate bead-blasted,
and the
pedals blasted and painted. Unfortunately I forgot to shoot photos of
the
'after' product before installing it in the car. :<(

?? Actually, at full release, the spring in the figure is holding the
pedal out, but after a little depression of the pedal, the spring goes
past center and pushes the pedal in to help disengage the clutch.?
?
?? ?It seems very clever to me, and an excellent approach to taming a
heavy clutch.? What I'm not sure about is the force required to do much
good at such a short lever arm.? Seems like the brackets would have to
be very sturdy.?

the broken springs, install the new ones and reassemble.

NO NO NO!!!

What you do is WIND the spring onto the shaft. No disassembly
required!!!

How many of you have 'glass hoods on your Panteras?
Can you e-mail me a picture and answer a few questions?
Who made it?
How is the fit?
Cost?
Do any of you have a hood for sale? Glass OR steel?

Thanks,
Ron rfmccall at comcast.net

I thought about that, but since the whole assembly was in my hands I
didn't
consider it much.

It seems to me that doing so would really wreck the spring. Is it
resilient
enough to put up with that much abuse? You seem to speak of
experience?

I wouldn't mind replacing the broken springs on my own car if that's the

case? (Or even better, have YOU replace the broken springs on my car
if that's
the case!) HAHAHA!!!

Do tell?

Mike

Judy,

We have bought beverages in bulk by the bottle. It is how we can afford
to provide so much for so little. The whos and hows of the transaction
are irrelevant to the issue at hand.

The figures I presented are the actual numbers from the 2008 rally at
the Orleans. If we return there next year, I expect that the figures
would be about the same. Bob Reid is working with the Reno hotel to see
if we can put together a similar deal.

Mark

Okay, you lost me along the way.? I guess it would help if you'd
mentioned what we've been doing in the past.? I know we've not been
buying our own liquor and bringing it in so that is not a factor in
considering what we've done in the past.

It seems the Toyo Proxes ST size that's perfect for the rear of our
Panteras (295/50-15) is
becoming scarce, and soon to be obsolete.? Here are a few sources that
still list them on
their websites. I just ordered a pair from prostreetonline.? FWIW, the
price has gone up by
approximately 40% since I bought mine last year.? Get yours now while
you still can.

Hi Patrick

My plan is to build the engine myself. The block is already in a machine
shop waiting for the pistons. Just the finishing touch left on the
cylinder bore...

Thanks anyway!

I installed a new mechanical gauge yesterday and filled the system with
80% water (I won't keep it like this for more than 3 wks). I ran the car
on rear jacks twice for considerable time. It was a cool afternoon/night
and the car never went above 190 deg but.....I think it was running on
5-6 cylinders.
The car is tuned (old efi ) so rich that I foul plugs within a few
hundred miles. I'll change the plugs tonight.
Should I run a hotter plug? Will this make them last longer if I'm
running rich?
Will
