[DeTomaso] New Windshields ... was RE: Chipped windshield

Got my windshield fixed this morning. $20 for a 10-minute piece of work ... but I liked the fact that they used ultraviolet light to harden the liquid.  Looks good, too: what was once a dime-sized chip is only 1/5 that size now - and the chance of it spreading are (hopefully) slim. 

Now, I hear that there is a movement afoot in San Diego whereby a local glass vendor is looking to create a mold for Pantera windshields, which he plans to sell at much less than they are currently going for ... 

A quick look at a few of the vendors out there indicates that the glass itself (front windshield) ranges between $550 and $850, but the mouldings and trim are somewhat costly ($150-250 for each piece).  An all-in front windshield kit is around $1400.  Let's hope there is some hope for a price reduction here!

HaHaHa ... if the cops gave tickets up here for cracked windshields,
they would not have time to do anything else!!!  Seriously, living in
the "Rocky" Mountains ... no one gets glass insurance!!!  We simply
replace our windshields every year or so.  Just did my wife's van (Honda
Odyssey) and the total cost, including install, was $249.

I'll let you all know how the chip in my cat's windshield goes ...

I've used a patented 'glass repair kit, and they only work on very
specific
windshield defects- not on chips and not on side windows or backlight
glass.
With cracks, you first STOP-DRILL each leg of the crack thru the outer
layer of
a std 2-piece windshield, then pressure-inject a plastic that has about
the
same clarity as glass, curing it under pressure overnight. Over time,
the
plastic's color gradually yellows.
So a cheap repair kit from JC Whitney might buy you enough time to find
a
source for replacement glass. Cops will write a fix-it ticket for a
cracked
windshield if they spot it while you're driving, or if you get stopped
for
something else. Then you have 30 days to fix it or the ticket escalates
to something
