I make a solid cover out of cardboard (using a carb gasket as a template), 
and when I pull the carb, I immediately put the cardboard cover in its place and 
secure it with the nuts (finger tight), which has the added benefit of 
helping prevent losing the nuts.

You won't need to scrape any gaskets unless something has gone Seriously 
Wrong.
