If you are smelling it - you probably have a leak you can not see.  Take off the air cleaner and check around the carb.  Look for some discoloration on the manifold.  You may not see any liquid since the gas will quickly turn into vapor once it hits the hot manifold.

I had a fire once, and all it takes is once, that was caused by a leak at the accelerator pump diaphragm at underside of the carb.

I would check that.   If you haven't rebuilt the carb within the last 4-5 years, I would put that first on my list.
