Chuck, what that 5th-in-the-shift-gate-but-really-3rd-in-the-ZF means is the
long shift linkage rod is twisting when you try for some gears. This happens
in autocross when you shift too fast, so I now suspect that your linkage is
slightly mis-aligned. FWIW, I got this with a Hall 'fingerless' shift gate I
recently added to a Pantera. I had to slightly enlarge the opening and slant the
side of the cut-out for reverse before I could get all gears. If this is part
of it, try taking the 4 screws out of the shift gate and trying it with things
loose. If you then can get all gears, its the linkage adjustment, a loose
support trunnion under the L. header or a slightly loose connecting bolt as it
attaches to the ZF shaft. After you find the shift trouble, do something about
that too-small disengagement distance in the clutch! Good luck- J DeRyke
