Mike,
I also think the smaller lights are wired as turn indicators and not side markers. Italian cars of the era often have fender mounted indicators as well as front facing ones. European cars in general did not have them. Side markers were also not widely used in Europe at the time.

No, it has European side markers. Look at it closely. It's a 1975 Pantera
L (I'm fairly certain it's not a GTS).
Only the 1971 and early 1972 Euro cars had the tiny front marker lights and
none in the rear. After that, they were built using the same panels as the US
cars. However, Euro cars weren't fitted with US-style side marker lights.
Instead, body-colored sheetmetal pieces were inlaid into the chrome marker
light surrounds, and bar-shaped amber marker lights were installed in front
(with only a sheetmetal inlay, no lights, at the rear).
Here's a couple of photos of Bill Milburn's 1972 Euro GTS:

Once De Tomaso ran out of Ford-produced bodyshells around 1977, he reverted
to what had been on the original Euro cars--simple round markers in the front,
and (usually) nothing at the rear.
Mike
