[DeTomaso] Oil Temp Gauge Wiring

     I am planning to install an Autometer electric oil temp gauge.  The instructions read, "route 18-gage wire from center terminal GND (-) on back of gauge to good ground near sender".  Is there some good reason I have to run the ground wire all the way back near the sender?  Is there any problem just finding a good ground near the gauge?  Isn't a good ground just a good ground?  Bill Taylor,  are you listening?
