[DeTomaso] dry sump system

Whether the oil in the reservoir drains back into the pan depends on the
location of the reservoir, the routing of the lines and how well the
pump seals oil seeping back through it.

In general your pump has a couple of suction stages that pull oil out of
the pan and pump it into the top of the reservoir. A good reservoir
should de-aerate the oil as it is pulled to the bottom of the reservoir.
The pump also has a pressure stage that pulls oil from the bottom of
the reservoir and pumps through the oil filter and into the engine. The
oil then ends up in the pan to be sucked up by the pump.

Also the traditional dry sump pan is very small and has little clearance
from the crank. Most of the oil should be in reservoir, not in the pan.
The fact that drained 8 quarts from the pan suggests to me that your
pan is not a standard dry sump pan (otherwise the oil would fill up past
the top of the crank and make it very difficult to start the car). So
while I've described a standard dry sump, it may not apply to yours.
