I use a plastic funnel with a long, flexible hose which I got at  Kragens. 
Hang the funnel from a metal hook formed from a coat hanger, put the  filling 
spout as far as possible into the fill hole on the side of the tranny,  fill the 
funnel and wait a while, Repeat until the fluid just starts to drip out  of 
the side fill port. Wait a while. Fill a little more  .... dripping  resumes? 
You are done.
 
The reason for the slow filling is small holes between the diff and  the gear 
housing. The small holes are needed so the diff doesn't run  dry on long 
uphills and the gears don't run dry on long downhills
