I'd recommend the thicher stuff that you purchased; although, you will be 
fine with either.  I recommend the thicker synthetic for mor gear shock 
protection.

No, that is a detent for the side shifter shaft.  The side hole will be your 
fill hole.  Jack the car up in the rear as high as possible and then fill 
till it spills over.  Jacking up the rear permits you to get in more fluid 
and the hole on level grounds spill out about .5 liter shy I'd approximate.

Probably not.  Some ZFs had one.  Although I have never seen one outside a 
picture.  Also, some ZFs to have a topside fill hole in the rear case on the 
smooth section on the driver side.
