[DeTomaso] Charlie on the hook again....

Roland,

The Mercury Capri was very different and wasn't made until later in the
70's. It used a standard US style ignition switch which was much larger
diameter and had a traditional US style ford key. Not sure about the
buzzer? Perhaps the German Ford part was modified to include it since
most of the cars were to be shipped to the US? The turn signal switch
was very different too. US cars in those days did not have the headlight
bright / dim on the turn signal and I don't know of any US car that has
ever had the horn there.

Don't let the logo fool you. Ford and GM always made the outside
manufactures put their (Ford / GM) logo on all the parts. I guess it was
to try and force you to go the dealer instead of straight to the
manufacturer for replacement parts? The problem you have at the German
Ford dealer is probably because the part is old and not in the system
any more so they just say it's US. The dealers here don't have a lot of
old parts in their computer systems either.

Gray, strange for me is, that
if i give the part no. of one
of those to a german Ford
dealer, they say it is a US
part. Wasn't ther a Mercury
Capri, that used that
switches? Europeen ignition
switches for example, dont'n
carry the contact for the
buzzer. Europeen cars didn't
have buzzers. I know, that a
similar turnsignal switch was
also used on a Ford Capri over
here. To use that switch in a
Pantera we have to bend the
arm in shape. It has also a
different cable connector.
Bosch and Lucas produced parts
all have the manufacturer sign
on them. These only carry the
Ford logo. I don't know, who
worked for Ford that time.

The European Fords were very
different from the USA Fords;
although as
you say everything was
ultimately under the control
of or at least
approved by Detroit.

Ford like all the
manufacturers uses outside
suppliers for many of the
parts and I'm sure most of the
electrical parts for Ford
Europe were
sourced from European
suppliers. On the Pantera the
turn signal and
ignition switches are very
different from those found on
US cars;
however the alternator and
voltage regulator are US parts
and were most
likely shipped with the
engines.

Any of you old Ford guys know
who they used to supply
electrical parts
for Ford Europe?

Isn't a Ford a Ford?
Everything Ford Europe does
or did was or is under control
of Ford USA.

I thought the ignition and
turn signal switches were
European Ford?

As does the wiper motor and
the cooling fans.

There are other British
electrical items, like the
Otter fan
thermo-switches, the front
flashers, and I would be very
surprised if
not the entire electrical
system around the steering
wheel is British.
The fusebox is probably
British as well.
