You're memory is correct sir! And as I recall the tank holds about 13
quarts.
See my earlier post regarding the dipstick,

Hi Mike,
If I am not mistaken the 911's run a dry sump set up with more oil then
a
crankcase would hold in its storage tank. The tank then has a float much
the
same as a gas tank that runs the gauge. It has been some time that my
head
was under the bonnet of a 911, but I do remember a dip stick in the tank
too. No dealer involvement needed.

This morning I was reading Car & Driver.
They were talking about a BMW (M3?) that no longer has a dipstick.
A friend has a 1973 Porsche 911, and it has an oil level gauge on the
dash,
in lieu of a dipstick, from new. So it's not exactly a new idea.
It's a nice idea to have an oil level gauge (which is calibrated so it
is
correct only when the engine is running), but I would want to have a
dipstick ALSO.
Mike (been let down by dipsticks before, when the car suddenly started
consuming oil and I failed to check it!)
