Actually the Porches do have a dipstick; it's located under the cap on
the oil tank. Unfortunately it's common for people to drop them down
into the tank when re-inserting them and since the gauge on the dash is
pretty accurate the propensity to spend hours trying to fish it out is
pretty weak resulting in a lot of cars running around with dip sticks in
the tank.

A friend has a 1973 Porsche 911, and it has an oil level gauge on the
dash,
in lieu of a dipstick, from new. So it's not exactly a new idea.
It's a nice idea to have an oil level gauge (which is calibrated so it
is
correct only when the engine is running), but I would want to have a
dipstick
ALSO.
Mike (been let down by dipsticks before, when the car suddenly started
consuming oil and I failed to check it!)
