[DeTomaso] NPC but relevant no less to driving my Pantera-GPS-navigator

I use TomTom 5 on an HP Ipaq 6515. 

All-in-one, cellphone, bluetooth, built-in GPS receiver, Wifi, and because
it is a PocketPC, and Microsoft compatible, I have it synchronized with my
Outlook and have all my contacts, my calendar, my e-mails... I think it's
great. 

My first GPS navigator was Viamichelin 2.0, and I didn't like it at all. It
would do strange things like ask you to take each exit and then re-enter a
ring road (mathematically it is shorter to take the inside of a circle, but
it isn't real practical!) The street database wasn't great. They have since
released ViaMichelin 3.0, but I had already switched to TomTom. 

Their customer support has the reputation of being particularly poor, the
the software works well. It has lots of options, such as the one Bjorn just
discovered - to re-route you around traffic jams or construction. You can
simulate trips to see the distance between two points and time required to
drive it. 

I travel a lot for work and it is really a lifesaver. 

And, ahem, cough cough, you can sometimes find the program for free on the
'net. 

Other than ViaMichelin I haven't done any side-by-side comparisons, so I
can't tell you which is "Best". I just know that I like TomTom a lot. 

Oh, and the voice that guides me is Yoda. Works well, he does. Strangely
talks though.

TomTom One with TomTom 6.

Hardware and software are nice and loads of maps are available though not
cheap.
Good support.
The stock POI works good (import available of course) but you can not
specify direction (which cuts half of the <beeps> for speed cameras).

Just the other day I found a new feature (that probably been there for years
but who reads the manual?). There was an accident and road block in front of
me. I found a "road block" button that made a local detour around the area
and got back to original route a mile down the road!  :-)

Most devices are rather equal today but test the software first and check
out how to update and get fresh maps!
There are only two or three OEM suppliers of maps but the vendor package and
distribute them differently.

RDS/TMC is your choice if needed (read: if available to use).

Now this is a NPC discussion that in my opinion is very interesting (in lieu
of the ongoing Jiffy BS).

It would be interesting to find out more from folks on this list which GPS
manufacturer they prefer and what software add ons may be available to chart
police activities.

I have been looking at the Garmin 650 or 680.

Any advice/input?
