[DeTomaso] Alignment specs on '72 pre-L?

That reminds me of a saying when you see a tall guy with a short girl.

When you're nose to nose, your toes are in it.
When you're toes to toes, your nose is in it.

You want to measure the difference in inches between the front and rear of
the tire. If the tires are perfectly parallel, you have 0" toe. If the
fronts are 1/2" narrower than the back, you have 1/2" toe in.

Here's a trick I learned from J.T.

Drop a plumb bob from the center of your tire. Stick it in the tread with a
tack or small nail as close to center as you can get. Do the same thing on
the other side of your car. Obviously you don't want to stick it in so far
that you puncture the tire, but you only need a small amount of depth.

Measure the distance between the plumb bobs.

Keep the tack stuck in the tread as you roll the car forward. Keep pushing
until the plumb bobs are near the floor again (in the front this time).

Measure the distance again.

The difference is your toe in or out.

I now have a nice pair of brass plumb bobs for this very chore.

Will.

Toe-in is simply used to avoid toe out (for general alignment purposes).
You don't want toe-in you just absolutly need to avoid toe out. Toe out
can give you instablility. You toe-in enough such that the slop in the
steering systems and deformation of tires will not generate any toe out.
The sloppier the ball joints and eveything else the more toe in you need.
