While they don't *make* R12 anymore, there is still a lot of it about.   Any 
older car would need it, and thus the A/C industry is geared up to recycle and 
re-sell the stuff.   If somebody there is telling you they can't get it, I'd 
start asking elsewhere before giving up entirely.

And if Spain is just cranky and backwards on the topic, remember France isn't 
that far away either, and you speak French!   Could be a road trip is in your 
future!
