In the mid 90's, I left my '72 Pantera with a reputable shop and went to work in France. The engine ate an intake valve the week before I left (stock 2-piece valves), and they were supposed to just re-build the engine to a fairly basic level. </div>
<div> </div><div>Along the way they discovered other things. Most of them really needed to be done and it wouldn't make sense to not do it since the car was partially disassembled. I would have agreed to many of them had I been asked. Some of them I would have probably preferred to wait, based on the size of the bill that I was accumulating. But I wasn't given the choice.</div>
<div> </div><div>I flew back to pick up my car, and instead of $3-4k for a básic engine rebuild, I had a $13,000 bill. The vendor admitted that the bill got kind of out of hand, but all the work was in fact done and done well - I just probably would have skipped some of the less important things. The shop was honest in that they didn't invent work or overcharge me for what they did, but they fixed whatever they found along the way and that got expensive. </div>
