Many consider the Mangusta one of Giugiaro’s finest automobile designs. Giugiaro was named Car Designer of the Century 1999 and inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame in 2002. One unique feature is its gull wing doors over the rear engine bay. It is also the first production car to use different size front and rear tires.</span><o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:16.2pt;background:white'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;color:black'>The name Mangusta (“mongoose” in Italian) supposedly came from when company founder Alejandro de Tomaso discussed with Carroll Shelby the idea of replacing the Shelby Cobra with a new racing car. Shelby signed with Ford instead to develop the GT40. De Tomaso adopted the name for the car since a mongoose is the one animal able to kill a cobra.<br><br><u>Of the 401 Mangusta cars built, approximately 200 remain in existence</u>. This vehicle won “The People’s Choice Award” at the La Jolla Concours d ‘Elegance 2012. Technical info: Mid-mounted Ford 302 V8 engine; 5 speed ZF transaxle.
