[DeTomaso] fan question

This is kind of a long story, so you don't have to read the whole thing unless you have nothing else to do! My overheating problems started when I first bought the car. The previous owner had a switch under the dashbto turn on the fans manually. On the way home the car started to overheat and when I tried to turn the switch on it fell apart so I stopped at my local auto shop and they fixed me up with a new switch. After that I realized the car was always running hot and was overheating consistently. I decided to get a new radiator and some better fan blades for the 2 stock fan motors. I installed all that and it still seemed to run A little bit hot so I installed a 3rd sucker fan with a dakota digital fan relay to turn it on at a certain temperature after the first two fans had already turned on with their thermostatic switches located in the radiator. This seemed to work OK and then at one point while working on the motor we discovered it had been using a Windsor thermostat instead of a Cleveland. We put the right thermostat in and it ran cool clear up until recently. The other day I was driving and things got very hot again, which indicated the thermostat was probably stuck. I just replaced it with another Cleveland thermostat, and found that the thermostat that I've been running was in fact the correct thermostat, it just must have stuck open momentarily the other day. I like having 3 fans coming on at different times depending on the engine heat, because that will help keep the engine from overheating if I'm in bumper to bumper traffic in a very hot area. You know, with all this global warming I just want to be prepared 😅

Sincerely,

Chris

Subject: [DeTomaso] fan question

Chris,

The elephant in the room for this discussion is why you feel the need to have …three… fans????

Additionally, why do you apparently want to have …all… three fans running every minute the engine is running????

at highway speeds, there should generally be no need for any electric fan to be operating. Airflow through the radiator should be sufficient, unless the airflow is effectively being restricted with the presence of three fans, preventing any straight flow of air through the radiator. Hmmmm….

Can you please share what you are using for your two pusher fans and also please describe any cooling issues you currently or previously experienced??

Larry
