[DeTomaso] more Doorhandle problems

I see no way of unhooking the door handle assembly from the little metal rod that goes inside the door, so I tried drilling out the ends of the rod that holds the handle in place within the plastic cup. I used a very thin awl to try to tap it out, but it won't budge. It's almost as if the handle itself has little nubs on each end to hold it in place, and that there is no rod running through it and the end of what should be a rod is actually part of the handle. I know that can't be true though because there are inward tabs that the rod also must go through. Not sure what I'm doing wrong, but I don't want to risk wacking on it any harder because the T-shirt I'm using to protect the brand new paint Isn't that reliable!

As my edit to my first post indicated. You do not need to remove the
gray pot metal piece with the ball.

Thank you for the instructions, but unfortunately they do not
correspond to anything in my door lock system. There are no plastic
parts, it's all metal, and the lock mechanism is held in with 3 slot
head screws, one of which is inaccessible unless I remove the Chrome
metal doorhandle piece by drilling out the rivet that is used for it to
rotate on. I don't see anything that resembles a ball of any kind.

   Chris,
P.I.M. does have a replacement bucket with a replacement pivot shaft as
   described by MIKE THOMAS.
To remove door handle you will need to detach a link rod connected to
the handle with a plastic component. Be very careful with that plastic.
You will need to transfer the lock portion of the handle to the new
   bucket.
To do this, you will need to remove the gray pot metal piece that has
the ball. That will require driving out the small black pin that holds
it to the lock assembly. Then you can remove the lock assembly from
your old bucket, place in replacement bucket, and reinstall the gray
pot metal piece and it's retaining pin.
TAKE PHOTOS OF EVERYTHING prior to, and during the disassembly process.
Take note of the orientation of the key slot as it resides in the
   bucket.
Pay special attention to the orientation of the gray pot metal piece.
And if you do wind up needing to do both left and right hand buckets,
be aware there are subtle differences between the two sides.
On a sidenote, if you have door locks that require different keys, now
would be the time to get things re-keyed to a single key, which should
operate both doors and the trunk. If you need to re-key the locks, that
is something I can do for you.
