All,
I have also come to agree with John that the part remaining in the crank shaft is an adapter / housing for the actual bearing. As such just replacing the bearing is all that needs to happen, and the adapter does not need to be removed.

This is a screen capture of a simple Google search. Looks like just replacing the bearing could be an option.
