[DeTomaso] McLeod Pressure Plate - Old and New / Advice Removing Pilot Bushing

Dear Will,

You "hate removing those"? Me, too. I have found the pilot needle bearing units to be a much more challenging job than the oilite bushing removal. I thought it was just me. I would be keen to know if the 5/8" tap method works well for the resistant pilot needle bearing units.

                     Warmest regards, Chuck Engles

Ouch. I hate removing those.

I could see the tap working if it was an oilite bronze pilot but mine is a needle bearing pilot. I'll give it a go though.
Thanks

Pulling a pilot bushing is sooo simple and mess-free if you simply screw a 5/8" tap (either thread size) into the bushing, thread until it bottoms, then continue to turn until the bushing is jacked out. Clean-up involves wiping bronze thread-swarf up. With the hammer;hydraulic approach, clean up covers everything within a 10-12 ft radius including the hammerer.

It was -very-, no... -extremely- messy when I tried it. And in the end, I still needed a puller. I'm sure I'll be using it again. :)

Get a socket that just barely fits inside the bearing, and put it bottom end in to the hole. Whang with a BFH. As the socket compresses the TP it will force the bearing out hydraulically. You will likely have to remove the socket and add more TP as the bearing comes out.
