[DeTomaso] DeTomaso Digest, Vol 220, Issue 21

Trip, good to hear from you.
If you bushings are showing cracks it’s likely the rubber has dried out and begun to deteriorate. If you are going that far, take a close look at you ball joints as well. If the boots are in good shape and still pliable, they may still be good.
To pop the ball joint out of the A-arm, supposedly you can whack the nub on the back of the upright casting with a heavy hammer to get the ball join lose. Never worked for me. My best luck has been with a ball joint separator. I have one like this one from Home Depot https://www.homedepot.com/p/GEARWRENCH-Universal-Ball-Joint-Separator-for-1-1-8-in-2-1-8-in-and-30mm-56mm-Joints-3916D/205594195?source=shoppingads <https://www.homedepot.com/p/GEARWRENCH-Universal-Ball-Joint-Separator-for-1-1-8-in-2-1-8-in-and-30mm-56mm-Joints-3916D/205594195?source=shoppingads&locale=en-US&srsltid=AR5OiO0ub0F9m8V_xLHAYDBVS1T6hdP9PCLU7jOZSs7B_jTCiyZlcscXYaw> &locale=en-US&srsltid=AR5OiO0ub0F9m8V_xLHAYDBVS1T6hdP9PCLU7jOZSs7B_jTCiyZlcscXYaw. Very effective and easy to use. If you plan to reuse your existing ball joints, you have to be careful not to damage the rubber boot.
Once you have the ball joints separated and the A-arms removed, test your ball joints to see if they are still stiff when you try to rotate them by hand. If they are and the boots are in good shape, now would be good time to take them to someone who can tap them for a zerk fitting (for a grease gun) to push some lube into them to extend their life. This would be done on the side opposite the threaded end in the center of the dome. If they ae loose and sloppy, they need to be replaced along with the bushings. Give your tie rod ends the same test.
According to Mike Drew, the bushings for the 5-S are the same as earlier Panteras, but it would be a good idea to consider polyurethane bushings from one of our vendors. If you want to stay with stock bushings and needs some, I have two full sets of 16 bushings. I’d be happy to sell you one for a reasonable price.
Good luck, your results may vary . . .

I just tried removing the upper ball joint to remove the A arm – forgetaboutit – that thing is really stuck on.
Holy smokes, I guess I have to heat it and beat the hell out of it…thanks for helping………
